Hey guys. In today’s ‘random’ post I’m going to discuss the evolution of the Simpsons in gaming. From Hit and Run to Tapped Out, they sure have had a long run in games. I’m a big fan of gaming, and I can remember growing up with some of these titles. Geez, I feel old now.
The Simpsons Arcade Game
The Simpsons Arcade Game was the first officially released game to sport the Simpsons licence. It was released in 1991 following the huge success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade Game. Both the Ninja Turtles and Simpsons arcade games were published by Konami.
Story wise, it wasn’t to interesting. Mr. Burns drops his diamond into Maggie’s mouth, and in order to get it out he captures Maggie. The Simpsons have to fight through waves of goons and zombies in order to save her.
However, the fact that the voices were done by the actual cast, that each member of the family played in a unique way and the authentic feel made this game a huge success. So successful in fact, that it’s been remade twice. EA has made a iOS version available to download of iTunes, and if was also remade to be comparable with Xbox and is available to download of the Xbox Marketplace.
The Simpsons Road Rage
The Simpsons Road Rage was released in 2001 and published by EA. It was on the PS2, Xbox, GameCube and Game Boy. The game didn’t do very well, it got a 6/10 from GameSpot, and they quoted “The only saving grace to Road Rage is that it’s a Simpsons game.” Shortly after release, SEGA sued the developers because the game was so similar to a popular SEGA title, Crazy Taxi, and as a result the game was put out of production.
The story isn’t very good either. After Lisa witnesses busses damaging the environment, and killing Moleman, she tell Homer that busses should be banned. So Homer decides to set up a Taxi company, Homer 4 Hire. Soon after it is discovered that Mr. Burns is fuelling the buses with nuclear energy, and so everyone decides to set up a taxi company.
The Simpsons: Hit and Run
A personal favourite of mine. And it’s not just me that shares that opinion. Hit and Run is praised as the best Simpsons game ever made. Even above Tapped Out! It was released by Radical Entertainment in 2003 and 11 years later it is still bringing in revenue each year. In 2013 a modding community was set up that focused on Hit and Run.
It shares many aspects similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, specifically the heavy depended on driving system. Throughout the seven levels, you get to play as Homer, Marge, Apu, Lisa and Bart. However, characters such as Chief Wiggum and Grampa Simpsons are borderline playable in driving missions.
During the story, citizens of Springfield witness strange happenings, such as large robotic bees and strange black vans. Homer decides to take the matter into his hands and along the way witnesses Zombies, alien abductions and a whole range of crazy events!
So there we have it, a quick recap of some of the games based of the Simpsons. Do you have a favourite? Leave a comment below!
